RIVERSIDE >> The Damien High School swim team came within two seconds of winning its second consecutive CIF Southern Section Division 2 title on Saturday at Riverside City College.
The Spartans, who did not win any of the 11 events, nearly won the 400-yard freestyle relay to win the meet. Chase Travisano took the last 100-yard leg with the lead, but was passed by Foothill’s Zane Smith, who swam two seconds faster than the Damien senior.
The Santa Ana school won the race and won the title by four points.
“It definitely was exciting,” Travisano said. “It was crazy. We won it last year and we wanted to win this year. But second is great, still.”
Preston Planells, Cody Liske and Ryan Terlip were with Travisano, and the Spartans had a time of 3 minutes, 6.10 seconds.
“It was an amazing race at the end,” Damien coach Damon Pitre said. “They swam out of their skin, we swam out of our skin. You couldn’t ask for anything better. Depth is the key to our program. Always our guys finish well and finish strong. I’m happy for them.”
The Spartans’ best individual finishes were three fifth-place swims.
